11. Remember This
It's very interesting that almost the only
Country music played at the CMA Awards
was from the Eagles! It is indicative that
Country music has lost sight and track of its
roots. It's not accidental that an album only
on sale at Walmarts topped both the Pop
and Country charts. It would be nice if radio,
record company bosses and other artists
actually learned something from this
release. It is such a pleasure not to have my
head beaten up by Country which is actually
really heavy metal.
I am a sucker for these unusual pairings.
Take Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris.
This produced a masterpiece of a CD in "All
The Roadrunning." So therefore putting the
legendary Robert Plant, lead singer of,
among other things, Led Zeppelin and
Bluegrass star, Alison Krauss has all the
potential possible. However, as a longtime
critic of T. Bone Burnett's production skills, I
was uncertain of the result. This CD took me
three listens before I came to grips with it. I
am still critical of T. Bone's production;
especially vocal production which is at times
sloppy, the talents of Robert and Alison are
such as overcome any production negatives.
The material runs the gamut from rock to
Celtic with all stops in between. This may not
be a masterpiece but is bound to get a
Grammy nod. A hearty congratulations for the
cover photography from Pamela Springsteen.
It is perfect.
I make no bones about it, I like Lisa O'Kane!!
In an era of mediocrity, she stands out. She
is a first rate writer, a good singer and this
CD is very well produced. In fact this CD
reminded me of that equally talented Suzy
Bogguss and there lies the problem. We live
in times of increasing irrelevancy and asI
said earlier, mediocrity. Can Lisa turn the
tide? Me hopes so!! With the redoubtable
publicist Martha Moore behind her and a
producer in Edward Tree who actually knows
how to produce, Lisa is a name to watch. By
the way, nice touch having Albert Lee playing
on the lead off cut.

I loved their "All The Roadrunning" and this
live version is even better. The chemistry
between Mark and Emmylou shines
through as does the undiluted talent. One of
the Top Three CDs released this year. The
added DVD would make it gold dust on it's
own. If this isn't a Grammy winner then
NARAS should pack up their bags and go
home!!! Just for the record.....at what
venues was it recorded?
THIS IS MY ALBUM OF THE YEAR
One of my sadnesses in life is not having
met Walter Hyatt. When he died in the
notorious crash of the ValuJet in the Florida
Everglades, we lost arguably the single
most talented individual in
Country/Americana. This first volume of
material that he had ready for his next
album in 1996 now sees the light thanks to
his wife Heidi and a bunch of musician
friends. Musicians that include Billy Block,
Byron House, Pete Huttlinger, Jerry
Douglas, Carrie Rodriguez, Dan Dugmore,
Jim Hoke as well as the Jordanaires,
Riders In The Sky, David Ball and Allison
Moorer.

This is a CD that exposes as trash what is
currently passing itself off as Country
music. I would recommend that every label
artist and I mean all, listen to this CD and
learn. It is a bit like returning to the well. It
should be required listening for every would
be songwriter and should be required
listening for every record label and
publishing company executive!!!
Well produced but takes a couple of
listenings before you get into it and then it
is sublime.

This is so funny. Nana reminds me of
Jonathan Winters. I love it. This is going to
live in my car to brighten me up on those
days I feel down.
Featuring the talents of Dennis Crouch,
Ruthie Dornfeld, Jerry Douglas, Stuart
Duncan, Viktor Krauss, Kenny Malone and
Jeremiah McLane, this CD by guitar and
mandolin virtuoso starts off with Grammy
nominated "Little Monk." This is Russ's first
solo effort in over 18 years. It is a work of
pure brilliance.
Caroline's voice belies her youthful looks.
There is something "old" in her singing that
is very reminiscent of Hazel Dickens. This
reminded me so much of my folk music days
back in the late 1960s. I would recommend it
to anyone enjoys the folk music of that period.

I admit it. I am a big KWK fan. To anyone not
aware of the trio, let me introduce the trio.
Keiran Kan was one half of The O'Kanes who
had a lot of success in the late 80s. Kevin
Welch has written more hits than most folks
have had hot dinners and Fats Kaplin is one
of the most talented multi-instrumentalists in
popular music. If you like Mark Knopfler then
you are a KWK fan without knowing it. This is
a great CD.
Produced by my good friend, legendary
bassists, Byron House, this is a combination
of a lot of different musical genres. Guest
musicians include Sam Bush, Cindy
Cashdollar, Erick Jaskowiak, Fats Kaplin,
The Greencards, The Infamous
Stringdusters and Reese Wynans. I plan to
spend more time with this CD before the final
review is posted.
Back in my Folk music days in the late 60's, it
was not unusual to have album releases
where the singer was accompanied by his
own guitar and nothing more. Listening to
David Wilcox is like going back in time. It is
also scary because just as back in the 60's
there is a sense of danger in his music. Oh
yes, I like it, I like it a lot but just as
performers like Al Stewart, Davy Graham and
Bert Jansch took you on voyages into the
unknown so there is that feeling in David's
music.

There are certain singer/songwriters who
achieve cult status without troubling the
charts. These include Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark,
Robert Earl Keen and Joe Ely. There will
always be a place for these performers
because certain elements of the listening
public want quality and soul searching that
Joe etc. provide. On this live CD, Joe is
partnered by accordionist Joel Guzzman and
his numerous fans around the world will lap
it up.
Oh wow!!!! This is the one. List it under
Americana but this is one of the best Country
CDs in ages. Hayes is reminiscent of Guy
Clark, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt but yet
remains his own man. Brad Jones'
production is impeccable. With the likes of
Pat Buchanan, Brad Jones, Al Perkins, Fats
Kaplan, Thad Cockrell and Will Kimbrough in
support this is without doubt my ALBUM OF
THE MONTH. I can't wait to see Hayes at the
Americana festival.
I have been a Kimmie Rhodes admirer for
many years. We live in an age of instant
gratification and fast food and Kimmie's
latest CD is like fine wine; it needs to be
savored. This is not cheap throwaway plonk
but Mouton Cadet vintage wine. I am about to
embark on listen #2 and will continue this
review when I have imbibed more.

As the son of author and politician,
Larry McMurtry, James proves that the
acorns don't fall far from the tree.
"Cheney's Tree" totally nails James'
political and social leanings. Musically,
it is a take no prisoners affair. If you
are looking for a wimpy outing then
walk on. Not for everyone but James is
in that tradition that started with the
Folk Protest songs of the 60's, went
onto the 70's Outlaw movement and
has challenged our social conscience
since.
If I had heard this tribute to Dusty
Springfield without having heard the
original, I would have quite liked it but
unfortunately it is a pale cover of
Dusty. One listen to "Live In Memphis"
makes this recording redundant. The
best tribute to Dusty is to listen to that
recording. Shelby would have done
herself a greater favor by recording a
CD of her own material. She
abandoned Country music and she
should abandon this type of project.
Elvis Costello is in many ways similar to
Willie Nelson. He is eclectic and each
CD he releases is like a reinvention.
This CD is no different and what is
more there is no homogeneousness
one song to another. of particular
interest is "Pardon Me Madam, My
Name Is Eve" the lyrics of which were
co-penned by Loretta Lynn.

I have been very critical of Van's last
CDs but with this soulful release, he is
back on form as a singer, writer and
producer. I noticed some interesting
pickers including Sarah Jory, the
legendary Mick Green, Garaint
Watkins, Crawford Bell and Cindy
Cashdollar. Van also wades in with
some tasty piano and sax and some
interesting ukelele. This is vintage Van
Morrison and will be listed as one of
his classic CDs.
A great no nonsense Blue CD. Lots of
great slide guitar and blues harp; the
latter courtesy of producer, Bob
Corritore. Based in San Diego, Tomcat
is possibly the closest connection to
the Texas Country Blues tradition. If
you love the Blues, then get this CD!!!
