Steve Gulley left and Josh Shilling joined.
Mountain Heart left Skaggs Family and signed
with Rural Rhythm. OK that's the news. Now
to the CD. At long last MH have come up with
a live release and it is a gem. Mountain Heart
have long been one of my favorite Bluegrass
bands and that is because they have always
gone an extra musical mile. A for example is
their take on the Allman Brothers' "Whipping
Post." I would love to hear them reprise
Cache Valley Drifters' cover of  Cream's
"White Room." By the by Jimmy VanCleve is
becoming one of the best Bluegrass
producers. This should be Bluegrass' album
of the year. The only negative is the awful
cover photograph.
Gary is supported by a stellar bunch of
friends: Emory Lester, Gail Wade, Mike
Auldridge, Ron Stewart, Marc Roy and Kene
Hyatt. Live Bluegrass always have a certain je
ne sais quoi and this is no exception. Gary
has long been a crowd pleaser and this CD
should add to his prestige and could put him
up there with the better known. Gary also
proves that he is a songwriter who is bound to
get that 'major' cut before long.
Guest musicians are:
Marty Stuart, Rob Ickes, Charlie Cushman,
Ben Isaacs, Carl Jackson, Aubrey Haynie, J.D.
Wilkes and Scott Joss. I love Merle Haggard.
Let me say that at the outset. However, Merle
does not possess a Bluegrass voice. It is too
warm and lacks the high lonesome sound
synonymous with Bluegrass. This CD is
Merle being Merle with a Bluegrass
instrumental background. As such, it is
comfortable without being a serious
Bluegrass contender. I can't help but wonder
how it would have turned out with Bil VornDick
at the helm.

As one would expect, the production is
impeccable. However, with a bunch of stellar
"friends" on the CD, it is rather difficult to tell
how good the Dixie Bee-Liners are. Those
friends include Mark Fain, Andy Falco, Andy
Leftwich and David Talbot. The songs were
written by band members Brandi Hart and
Buddy Woodward with some outside help and
their writing shows how empathetic they are.
All in all this is a very credible debut CD and I
look forward to seeing them at IBMA in 2008.
There used to be an adage that you couldn't
be good looking and play Bluegrass. Well
Rhonda certainly proved that isn't true.
Rhonda is certainly the "glam" Queen but
once you get past the "pin-up" cover, you find
a CD chock full goodies. Rhonda is true to her
Bluegrass and Country roots. However, the
stand-out tracks are in fact duets. The duet
with Russell Moore is sublime and the one
with Keith Urban is a revelation.
When a new act is eulogized even before their
first release, the tendency is that we scribes
say, "we'll see." Well with their debut album,
Jamie and Darrin, who are no strangers to the
 Bluegrass stratosphere; Jamie with Doyle
Lawson and Darrin with sister Rhonda, John
Hartford and latterly with Ricky Skaggs, have
delivered in full measure. There is something
retro about their harmonies and that makes it
all the more enchanting. However, it is the fine
song selection that lifts this set. One
question. Is it Joe Dean playing banjo on
"Poor Boy Workin' Blues" as he is not
credited?

Let me explain why this may possibly be the
best Bluegrass album to be released tis
century. Great songs from principally Mike
Henderson and Chris Stapleton; Vocals from
Chris Stapleton that run from Ray Charles
and Joe Cocker and are as soulful as can be;
fine picking from Richard Bailey, Mike Fleming
and Tammy Rogers as well as Chris and
Mike.
THIS IS MY ALBUM OF THE MONTH.
Jason is an alumnus of Jim & Jesse's
Virginia Boys. He is a very talented fiddle
player of the old school and if you like first
generation Bluegrass then you will lap up this
CD. As well as playing fiddle, Jason also
plays mandolin and guitar and has a very
pleasant vocal style. Definitely a keeper!
Michelle Nixon's banjo player< Jason Davis is
barely out of high school but shows himself to
be a might fine banjo picker. On this CD he
has some tasty guest players including Steve
Gulley, Alan Bibey, Tim Stafford, Ron Stewart
and Phil Leadbetter. He shows that he is
adept at both the fast and furious as well as
the slower tunes.

Jimmy and Moondi were members of that fine
group Chesapeake. This CD which features
no guest musicians is a pure delight. It
reminds me of those days back in the 60's
when folk music was king. For lovers of good
music.
My how Jessie and Taylor have grown. They
sound vocally like a cross between Don and
Phil Everly when they did on "Songs Our
Daddy Taught Us," the Louvin Brothers and
Jim & Jesse.  That is a high compliment.
Backed by Michael Cleveland, Audie Blaylock,
Barry Reid, 'crazy' Frank Wakefield, Jordan
Tice and Danny Knicely as well as Anna
Backer (their mama), the brothers have
released what is without doubt their best CD
to date. Musically, Jessie and Taylor threaten
to become a major force in Bluegrass.
Take banjo player Wes Corbett, Simon
Chrisman on hammered dulcimer and
guitarist Jordan Tice and you come up with
music that defies categorization. Think Nickel
Creek, Three Ring Circle, Bela Fleck, Tony
Trischka, David Grisman and you get the
picture. If you haven't got it yet then take Jazz,
Celtic, Psychograss, Dawg music, Pentangle
folk and fix them up in an acoustic pot.

Not since the late and much lamented David
Schnauffer have I heard a dulcimer played
with such style as in the hands of young Mr.
Chrisman. Wes' banjo and Jordan's guitar
both underpin and weave around the dulcimer
to make audio-visual patterns. This
instrumental album will find itself at the front
of my listening for a long time collection.

This CD is culled from Dave and River Bend's
Vetco albums, "Dave Evans and Rive Band"
and "Call Me Long Gone" from 1979 and 1980
respectively. Although most of the musicians
have not reached stellar success, Josh
Graves is an exception. Dave is a singer and
banjo player in the grand tradition of the
founding fathers of Bluegrass. This is a great
CD to have in any collection.
This CD is culled from Larry's albums from
1975 to 2003 which is a wealth of material
from which to draw. Every superlative has
been heaped on Larry's head and therefore it
is a double pleasure on revisiting these older
tracks. There are some stellar pickers on this
collection including Dave Harvey, Barry
Crabtree, Mike Lilly, Art Stamper, Ricky
Skaggs, Michael Cleveland and Wendy Miller.
Pure Gold!!!
This is as close to angels as I am likely
to be. Becky has a voice to die for, she
is a great songwriter and the
production is ace. Add to that some fine
banjo and guitar picking from
co-producer Brian Fesler and you get
the message. Oh yes, add into the mix
Randy Kohrs...A must have for the
collection.
